Independent Product Testing

DuoGen was recently one of several wind generators tested by Tim Bartlett for 'Sailing Today' magazine. This was a comparative test, using the facilities at one of Oxford University's wind tunnels.
The results will be published and discussed in the August issue of 'Sailing Today'.
It was, of course, only part of DuoGen that was assessed, as the water mode performance, quick change of mode and easy storage etc. was not included.
The fact is that DuoGen is such a unique product that the alternatives can only partially compare.

DuoGen is included in the "Gear: New Products" section of 'Sailing Today', in their July issue. Also, we're expecting our video to feature on the PBO web site any day now.
Look out for these and other mentions in the media!

Protection in high winds

DuoGen is the only wind turbine designed for yachts to be protected by self-furling.

In high wind speeds, the blades of conventional wind turbines progressively stall in order to keep rotational speeds and electrical output within reasonable levels. However, the machines themselves continue to face the wind and, as the wind increases, so does the loading on the rotor's disc, producing very large forces which are transmitted through the turbine's mountings to the yacht and her moorings.

DuoGen is designed to furl, reducing the intercept area of the turbine disc in response to gusts and sustained high wind speeds, thereby minimising stresses to the mountings and the yacht whilst maintaining an impressive output.

Mounting Interest

By far the majority of queries we get from potential customers are about fitting. With such a range of sizes and styles of yacht, it's not surprising that people have difficulty in working out how DuoGen can be mounted on their yacht. Well, we are now producing a mounting 'cradle', which holds the two mounting points on DuoGen, and then fixes to the rails. This gives even greater flexibility of mounting positions, and should solve most of the problems encountered.

Schooners, Ketches and Yawls

We've had several enquiries from owners of this type of sailing cruiser, and we have to say that DuoGen is the perfect renewable energy system for them.
Usually on this type of vessel wind turbines have to be mounted on the forward face of the mizzenmast because pole mounting at the stern interferes with the mizzen boom and sheets when sailing. This requires bespoke bracketry and the need to drill holes in the mast.
DuoGen allows a stern mount because the water mode is deployed when sailing and is therefore out of the way.

Look out for pictures from some of our installations.
They may help you to visualise how DuoGen would look on your yacht.
And check back often as the pictures will appear as soon as we have them!

Happy Cruising!
