SOLO SAIL AROUND AUSTRALIA CHALLENGE
|
Margaret Williams, a 45 year old GP from the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, set off on her bid to sail around Australia, alone. She began the 6,700 mile trip, likely to take between 70 and 80 days, on 19th October, a little later than planned. She is now sailing the Timor Sound, off Northern West Australia.
Eclectic is proud to have supplied, in partnership with our Australian distributor, Power Protection Solutions, a D400 Wind Generator which will help to keep yacht ‘Against All Odds’ batteries charged.
“Circumnavigating Australia non-stop is one of the most difficult passages in the world”, says Margaret. She sites frequent wind changes brought on by the effects of land, attention to navigation in order to avoid reefs, plus high risk of collision with busy coastal shipping.
Margaret’s passion for sailing began when she was 11 years old. Most of the 24,000 miles she has sailed since have been ‘short handed’ and 6,000 of those miles have been solo.
“No woman has been successful in this feat as yet,” says Margaret, “and I hope to be the first.”
We wish her luck and safe sailing!

On November 21 st, Margaret wrote in her log, “my windgenerator, the Eclectic D400 has been making all the power I need, I do really love this unit as it is always quiet inside and outside the boat and starts pumping in power earlier than most generators.”

‘Sailing Today – Gear Update |
Sailing Today’s equipment reviewer, Garth Cooper, has had a DuoGen on test on his yacht, ‘Ngaire’, for the past two years, and several of his very positive reviews have appeared in the magazine.
He recently reported that ‘Ngaire’ had suffered a blow on the stern from another yacht while she was tied up in harbour and unattended.
The DuoGen was knocked out of alignment, and there was a rumbling in the tower when the unit was rotated.
However, Garth was able to straighten it up, and set the wind mode in operation. In spite of its mishap, the DuoGen charged up the batteries within a couple of hours.
One or two parts need replacing as a result of the collision, but Garth’s conclusion was, “A reliable piece of kit which has performed well, helped keep my batteries topped up, and withstood plenty of rough treatment.”

The explosion of interest in grid-linked domestic turbines, such as Eclectic’s StealthGen, continues to grow.
You may have noticed, especially if you live in the London area, that there was a lot of media interest over the installation of a micro turbine on a house in South London at the end of October. That was a StealthGen System and the installation was supervised by Eclectic’s MD, Pete Anderson.
The householder, Donnachadh McCarthy, is an environmental journalist who received planning permission to have a turbine on his house three years ago, and it has taken until now to find a suitable system.
You can look at BBC news on line coverage by going to the DuoGen web site and clicking in the ‘Latest News’ box in the top right hand corner, or go to

You can see from the picture above that the StealthGen is perfectly in keeping with a suburban street.
