Ocean Challenge
The latest news about DuoGen’s sponsorship of Jim Shekhdar’s upcoming trip from New Zealand to South Africa.
Jim’s customised DuoGen has now been delivered to the boatyard
in Cornwall where his specially-built ‘rowboat’ is going through
its final fitting out.
Jim sees DuoGen as a critical piece of equipment, providing power and
warmth. If you remember from our earlier report, the DuoGen will be permanently
mounted centrally in the boat, with the alternator in the ‘dry’
cabin where Jim will sleep. An air stream is ducted past the alternator,
picking up heat and warming the cabin, keeping it dry and cosy.
We have provided three sets of blades to go with the machine, one full sized, one 66% and one 40% of full size. The shorter blades can be changed in seconds and, having a lower intercept area, will give Jim maximum flexibility in the severe conditions to be expected in the Southern Ocean.
The boat, as yet nameless, is due to be shipped out to New Zealand to
arrive in mid-August, and the row is set to begin in mid-September when
Jim leaves Invercargill.
Look out for news of Jim and his super row boat, with its special DuoGen
yaw arm, in magazines, newspapers and on TV in the next few weeks.
