| DuoGen Cruises
the World
Many of our customers are currently enjoying extended
cruises. Some are island-hopping in the Caribbean, and quite a few
have passed through the Panama Canal and are heading for the Gallapogas
Islands and beyond.
We recently had a message from DL in the Grenadine Islands, and
he had these comments to pass on about his DuoGen:
“Some marina owners out here are not allowing owners to run
their wind generators while on the dock as they are too noisy and
neighbours complain. The DuoGen is so quiet that there are no restrictions
on its use." |
Order your DuoGen now,
and keep your batteries in a
healthy state!
Don’t risk running out of energy as you sail. |

ZEILEN Review
DuoGen’s performance is reviewed in the June
edition of Zeilen, Holland’s premier sailing magazine.
Dutch journalists had a DuoGen machine to fit and test for the last
few weeks, and found that the installation was ‘easy’
and outputs were in line with our published figures.
We’ll have to wait until we get a translation before we know
what else has been said!
Please remember, for Dutch and Belgian customers, DuoGen is available
from De Rietpol in Spaarndam, who have a machine on display.

Using Several Charging Sources
It makes sense, on an extended cruise, not to rely
on only one source for battery charging. Many yachtsmen fit solar
panels as well as DuoGen, and also install smart charge devices
and up-rated alternators on their main engine.
We are frequently asked if there are problems associated with operating
these systems simultaneously. The short answer is ‘yes’
and ‘no’. There should be no risk of one system damaging
another. However, they all rely on monitoring battery terminal voltage
to determine the state of battery charge. Where you have multiple
charging sources, the output from one will raise the voltage read
by the regulator of a second, and this elevated reading can cause
the second regulator to assume the batteries are in a higher state
of charge than they actually are.
This may cause dump regulators to dump prematurely, or smart charging
systems to apply a less than optimal charging regime. There are
simple strategies to deal with these interactions. Firstly, keep
the number of regulators to a minimum. For example, DuoGen’s
regulator will also handle the output of solar panels up to 140
watts. Secondly, dump regulators can be fitted with a bypass switch
so that when you are on board, have maximum demand for power and
can monitor the system, you can switch the regulators out. Finally,
when starting the main engine specifically for battery charging,
you can stop DuoGen and isolate the solar panels.
On the positive side, premature operation of regulators usually
only occurs when the banks are in fairly good state of charge anyway.

Playing with the Big Boys
The Wind Energy International Trade Fair was held
in Hamburg from 11th – 14th May. This is the second year the
fair has been held, in response to the dynamic growth of this market
of the future.
DuoGen was promoted on the WindSupply stand, where the contribution
of UK manufacturers to the growing British and global wind energy
market is ‘showcased’.
Many UK companies were represented at the Fair, most of these operating
in the fields of large-scale on- and off-shore wind turbines. |
