DuoGen - November 2004 Newsletter

Rain Rain Rain Rain Rain

Anyone who braved the weather to explore this year’s Southampton Boat Show back in September will know that there was more to see than ever.
But the rain and wind kept some people away, with visitor numbers down by 20,000 on last year. In spite of this, many companies reported good business, and this was certainly the case for Eclectic Energy – visitor numbers to our stand were up by 15% on last year’s show.
Of course, we did have our new D400 on display. This dedicated wind generator impressed everyone who saw it; yachtsmen, engineers, journalists, people with an interest in installing some wind power at home and many others. We also got quite a bit of press coverage for our ‘world first’ at the show.
The D400 is now in production, and will be available towards the end of the year. See the D400 now at www.d400.co.uk.
The DuoGen continued to surprise and delight at demonstrations – it amazes us that there are still lots of yachtsmen out there who have not yet seen, or even heard of, DuoGen. It was frequently described as ‘very clever’, ‘ingenious’ and ‘a great piece of kit’!
And now, it’s official, because Eclectic has just been granted a patent on DuoGen.

Order a DuoGen for delivery before the end of 2004, and we will take £100 off the price.

Hurricanes Hurricanes Hurricanes Hurricanes Hurricanes Hurricanes

The poor weather in Southampton was nothing, of course, compared with the ferocity of the recent hurricanes at the other side of the Atlantic.
Several people came on the stand with stories about yachts laid up in the Caribbean, at the mercy of the storms. We know of a couple of customers whose yachts have been damaged, one most severely, and others who are breathing a sigh of relief.
We commiserate with all those who have suffered losses due to hurricane conditions – we know it’s a heartbreaking experience.
We did, however, hear an encouraging piece of news for DuoGen owners. DL’s catamaran was caught in the storms, and fortunately avoided any serious damage. He told us that his was the only wind generator working in Grenada after the hurricane. Because of DuoGen’s unique characteristics, he was able to remove the air hub and blades rather than just tie it up and hope for the best. Other wind gens were destroyed by the ferocity of the wind, but the DuoGen was re-assembled after the storm had passed, and was soon producing power again.
Another good reason to have a DuoGen!!

See Eclectic’s new Wind Generator, the D400, on Stand A153 at METS in Amsterdam 16th – 18th November and the European Wind Energy Exhibition at Wembley 22nd - 25th November, or see it now at www.d400.co.uk

Wind Wind Wind Wind Wind

This is the element, the power source, on which our products rely. But wind has its own rules (it’s in the physics!) and nothing we can do will change that.
When talking to prospective customers, we often find that people have unrealistic expectations of wind power.
The amount of power you can extract from the wind depends on
a) the size of the rotor you deploy (that dictates the volume of wind your machine intercepts), and
b) the speed of the wind, and also the quality of the air flow (whether there are objects in the way which make the air flow turbulent)
Of course, yachts are usually tied up in a sheltered position (remember to measure wind speed at the level of your wind gen and not at the mast head).
And there is a limit to how large a turbine you can deploy on the average sized yacht.
A well-designed wind generator can convert into electricity about 25% of the energy available in a wind stream arriving at its rotor. As the amount of energy in the wind stream varies by the cube of its velocity, it follows that there is very little energy to capture at low wind speeds.
This is where DuoGen’s water mode scores. By using the yacht’s whole sail plan to intercept the available wind, in most wind speeds, far more electricity can be produced by deploying the water mode than by leaving the wind generator in place.
